Police have suspended their search for a missing fisherman who was swept away by a high tide on the reef at Penfield Beach on Saturday morning.

The missing man has been identified as 34-year-old Kwahiwi Edwards of New York, according to Fairfield police.

The search is expected to resume in the morning.

Kwahiwi and a second fisherman became trapped around 7 a.m. Saturday. A third person, unrelated to the pair, jumped into the water to try to assist them.

The witness and the second fisherman were pulled to safety by a Fairfield Police boat, and the rescued fisherman was taken to the hospital, where he is recovering. Police credit the witness for saving his life.

Those familiar with the area say the tides can be deceptive and should be treated with extreme caution.
