The Bellmore Fire Department was dispatched to a propane leak at a filling station in Bellmore late Monday afternoon.
The call came in at 5:56 p.m. for the leak at Bellmore Avenue. According to the Nassau Fire Marshal's Office, the cylinder that is leaking is 1,150 gallons and is used to fill smaller 20 lb. cylinders typical on barbecue tanks.
The fire marshal says a shelter in place order is in effect for the nearby blocks. The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management is responding to the scene to coordinate sheltering.
The Fire Marshal's Hazmat Team has started a flaring operation to bring down the pressure in the cylinder and prevent release of propane gas.
