A 15-year-old boy is facing serious charges after prosecutors say he led police on a chase in a stolen SUV that ended in multiple crashes, including one caught on a home security camera Wednesday afternoon.
Ring doorbell video shows a white SUV careening onto the front lawn of a Port Washington home.
Authorities say the teen, whose name is not being released because of his age, took his mother’s Jeep without permission.
Police said officers initially spotted the SUV after the driver ran a red light and attempted to pull him over. Instead, the teen allegedly sped off, leading officers on a pursuit.
Investigators say the chase took a dangerous turn on North Bayles Drive, a dead-end street, where the teen turned the vehicle and crashed into a pursuing police car before fleeing on foot.
“The car was on the lawn," said Rich Albertson, a Port Washington resident. "They towed both, there was a police car also. They towed it. It was here until about 7 or 7:30 last night."
Prosecutors told the court the teen then allegedly stole a second vehicle on Port Washington Boulevard.
Police said officers again tried to stop him near Derby Road, where the situation escalated further. Investigators allege the teen accelerated and drove directly toward a police officer on foot. The officer fired a weapon as the vehicle approached, narrowly avoiding being struck.
The pursuit ended at the Americana Manhasset shopping center, where police say the teen crashed into several additional vehicles.
In youth court, the teen pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted murder.
“He’s charged with attempted murder, and nobody was ever hurt, nobody got any injuries,” defense attorney Michael Dergarabedian said.
A judge ordered the teen held without bail as the case proceeds.
