City officials say sidewalks must be shoveled within hours after snow stops falling.

City officials are reminding property owners across the Bronx that it is their legal responsibility to clear sidewalks after a snowstorm.

The New York City Department of Sanitation warns that strong winds and heavy snowfall could leave behind icy conditions, making unshoveled sidewalks especially dangerous.

“What ever falls is going to turn to ice,” said Joshua Goodman, deputy commissioner of the Department of Sanitation.

Goodman says property owners must clear sidewalks within four hours after snow stops falling — or by 11 a.m. if the storm ends overnight — to ensure residents can safely get to work, school and medical appointments.

Sanitation officials say enforcement will be active immediately following the grace period. More than 10,000 tickets have already been issued citywide this winter season.

“We’re not afraid to write tickets if we need to,” Goodman added.

First-time violations carry a $100 fine, while repeat offenders could face fines of up to $250.

Officials are encouraging neighbors to help one another when possible, but stress that responsibility ultimately falls on property owners. Residents are urged to shovel promptly once the final snowflake falls to avoid fines and keep sidewalks safe.
