Students displaced after water leak damages Montclair State dorm

Students at Montclair State University are being forced to move out of Barton Hall at Machuga Heights after a major water leak caused extensive flooding and damage.
The damage stemmed from multiple water leaks on the eighth floor. The University said Barton Hall will remain closed while repairs continue, and all student rooms must be completely emptied to allow repairs to move forward.
The building is owned and operated by Capstone On-Campus Management, which is responsible for repairs and remediation. Montclair State University said it is coordinating with Capstone while overseeing student relocation through its Office of Residence Life.
Officials said it is unlikely that repairs will be completed before the start of the spring 2026 semester. Students are being offered temporary housing at other university locations or the option to commute. Those who choose to commute will receive refunds for housing costs and a parking pass.
Students have been instructed to document any potential property damage or losses. The university said additional updates will be provided as remediation continues.
