Nassau County leaders issued a reminder about firework safety ahead of the Fourth of July.

Nassau County officials said the safest way you can celebrate with fireworks is by watching a professional show.

The county put on a demonstration to show the dangers of illegal fireworks. They said many illegal fireworks are not properly tested or manufactured, meaning the fireworks can easily explode in ways you do not want them to due to friction.

County officials said 20 house fires were caused by fireworks, with five of them in just the past year.

"Do not use illegal fireworks. Every year, we hear about people losing an eye, losing a finger. It’s not worth it," said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

One professional show happening Thursday night, ahead of the holiday, is in Nassau County at Eisenhower Park. The show will be free to attend at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater. The fun begins at 4:30 p.m., with live music and food. The fireworks and drone show starts around 9:30 p.m., depending on the weather. Nassau County officials advised arriving early and bringing a chair or blanket.

There will be many other professional shows this holiday weekend, including on the Fourth of July at both Bald Hill and Jones Beach.
