For the first time, a Wantagh pet boarding facility is responding publicly after a German shepherd died there in July while her owners were away on vacation.

Jet, a nearly 4-year-old German shepherd, died while staying at The Pawdorf, according to her owners. An attorney representing the facility says Jet passed away in her sleep.

The attorney also says Jet was overweight and suffered from high anxiety.

But the dog’s owners said she was not overweight and that the facility did not report any anxiety prior to her death.

Jet's owners previously said her harness was returned torn after she died. The business says it was unaware of any damage to the harness.

The case has prompted scrutiny of the facility. Following a News 12 report, the Town of Hempstead issued the business a violation. The Nassau County District Attorney's Office also began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jet's death.
