Suffolk police are investigating a two-vehicle crash overnight that erupted into a car fire in a quiet community in Islip.

It happened at Commack Road and Wallace Street. Fire officials believe Saturday's incident was the result of illegal street racing.

"There were 200 people. There was a Mustang that hit one of the parked cars engulfed in flames, hundreds of people running, cars crashing – it was like ‘The Fast and Furious,’" said resident Bradley Wade.

Suffolk police said several of the people involved crashed their vehicles at various intersections while trying to escape police. They say two of the crashes involved two of their officers who crashed their patrol vehicles into utility poles.

Officials say one of the crashes caused a substantial oil leak from the vehicle that initially caught on fire on Wallace Street.

Authorities say all the people involved fled the scene. Police are looking for those involved in the illegal street gathering. Suffolk Police say two officers were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
