One person was killed in a crash on Montauk Highway in Bay Shore, police say.

Police say they received a call about the crash around 10:15 a.m. near Gardiner Drive.

Two white sedans collided, police say. The impact was so severe that the cars became intertwined.

The crash shut down Montauk Highway near Gardner Park in both directions for hours.

There are no stop signs or streetlights for about a mile stretch on the roadway.

Neighbors say drivers need to slow down.

“Sadly, this is not the first go-around,” says Rachael Herth, of Bay Shore. “Maybe not to this magnitude, but we have had incidents of people running into the fence or they hit the poles.”

Police have not released the identity of people who died as a result of the crash at this time.
