Flames ripped through a multifamily home in Islip Terrace
just after midnight Saturday, leaving 19 residents from eight apartments
displaced.
The massive blaze that started in a first-floor bedroom
inside the Carleton Avenue home took about 50 firefighters almost two hours to
quell.
Three residents and a firefighter were treated for minor
injuries.
The fire left the home destroyed and boarded up.
Fire officials say there were “indications” that residents
tried to put it out themselves, but helped the fire grow larger.
Neighbors who spoke with News 12 said that the home was
overcrowded, an allegation that the fire marshal and the Town of Islip are
investigating.
Fire crews believe an unattended candle may have been the
cause of the fire.
