Long Island based-Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal health care fraud charges and agreed to pay $10 million to settle the criminal and civil cases against the corporation.
An attorney representing Zwanger-Pesiri said the company admitted to illegally performing and billing for procedures that were not ordered by a doctor.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said the company "bundled" tests, which means when a doctor ordered one test for a patient, Zwanger-Pesiri would automatically do a second test as well, then bill either Medicare or Medicaid for both.
In addition to the $10 million repayment, Zwanger-Pesiri was placed on two years of probation and agreed to enter into a corporate integrity agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services for oversight.
The company issued a statement, saying in part that it's pleased to put the investigation behind them.
Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is headed by a husband and wife team who are both doctors. They were not charged in the case.
