Health officials: Sixth rabid raccoon found in Amityville area this year

A sixth rabid raccoon was found in the Amityville area this year, according to Suffolk County health officials.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services reported that a sick raccoon was found in Amityville on May 10. The animal then tested positive for rabies.

The first rabies case in a raccoon this year was reported on Jan. 28. Prior to 2025, Suffolk County had not reported a rabid raccoon since 2009.

Health officials say there was human or pet contact with the most recent raccoon found to have rabies.
