A brave young cancer survivor from Suffolk County has beaten leukemia, and now she's on a mission to give back to other children who are facing serious diseases.
Nikolina Johannessen was diagnosed with leukemia when she was just 3 years old. She had to go through several years of chemotherapy, but she stayed tough and beat the disease.
Now, at age 6, she wants to give back to Stony Brook University Medical Center's Child Life Program, which helped her stay happy and comfortable during her treatment. Nikolina wanted to give her toys to the children at the hospital, but because it only accepts new toys, she decided to sell her toys to raise money to be able to buy new ones.
Nikolina and her family are holding a charity garage sale at Lake Grove Village Hall on Sunday, and they've named the event Nikolina's Attic. Over the past few months, they've asked for donations and have been overwhelmed by the response.
The sale tomorrow will be held from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
