A Yonkers man is warning his neighbors after he says someone showed up at his door and claimed to be with a utility company and wanted to see his bill.

He says it happened in early July on Long Meadow Road.

"She said she was working for Con Ed and that I might be eligible for a rebate. She asked if she could see a copy of my bill," says Yonkers resident Gary Adges.

Adges told the woman he didn't have a copy because he does everything electronically. But he said that didn't stop her from asking for a look at the bill on his phone.

He didn't show it because his ride had just shown up to pick him up.

"What saved me from opening the bill on the phone was jumping into the cab. It's something to be careful about," Adges explains.

Officials with the Better Business Bureau Serving Metropolitan New York urge everyone to always be careful.

"You don't show your utility bills to a stranger. If somebody comes to your door and says that they're from a utility company, go to the phone number that you have on your bill for customer service and call them. You say, ‘Have you sent somebody to my address today?’” says Claire Rosenzweig, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau Serving Metropolitan New York.

Officials with Con Edison say to also ask for the person's employee ID to confirm when making that call.

A Con Edison spokesperson tells News 12 that the company will never ask for personally identifiable information like your account number or balance.
