A Valley Stream woman suffering from a little-known disease says her last hope for survival is an experimental treatment requiring a several day coma.
Fallon Mirsky, 32, once a competitive skater, has been battling reflex sympathetic dystrophy or RSD for the past 15 years. To get through each day, she must take a constant cocktail of painkillers that includes methodone and ketamine.
Fallon says her last hope to rid herself of constant pain is an experimental and risky treatment that could kill her. It's only performed in Mexico and involves putting the RSD patient in a coma for several days.
The theory is - the coma allows the brain to reset, like a computer reboot.
Fallon is trying to raise the $100,000 she needs for the coma treatment on a crowd-funding website.
"I just want to be normal again," says Mirsky.
RSD affects about 5 million people nationwide. There is no cure.
