A Glen Head woman accused in the suffocation death of her newborn was arraigned Saturday on a charge of second-degree murder.
Police say they responded Thursday to a 911 call about a woman who was excessively bleeding. The woman, identified as Sharon Seudat, was taken to Glen Cove Hospital.
Police say Seudat, 20, was examined by an emergency room doctor who determined she had given birth. They say the woman denied it at first.
Police say the doctor learned that the baby girl was born at 4 Walnut St., where the woman lives with her parents. The baby girl was born alive and suffocated, according to Detective Capt. John Azzata. Police say the baby was then placed in a black plastic garbage bag and the bag was placed outside before officers or the fire department responded.
Seudat wrapped the baby, born 35 weeks into her pregnancy, in blankets and sheets and applied pressure to her mouth, according to the District Attorney's Office. She was arrested on Friday.
Investigators say the baby's father and Seudat's family did not know she was pregnant.
Azzata appealed to pregnant women in need of a safe haven to contact the nonprofit Children of Hope Foundation at 877-796-4673.
The judge ordered Seudat held on $1 million bond or $750,000 cash bail at her arraignment Saturday. She was also ordered to surrender her passport.
Seudat is due to appear in court next on Tuesday in Mineola.
