Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) crews worked overtime Sunday to restore power to thousands of customers who were affected by wild winds.
LIPA says about 57,000 Long Islanders were in the dark as Mother Nature wreaked havoc on trees and power lines Saturday and Sunday. Cecilia and Lawrence Reid went to a hotel after live wires and a large tree came crashing down at their home in hard-hit Plandome Manor. They say police wouldn?t let them back in until LIPA escorted them around the dangerous wires.
Utility crews were also busy in Hicksville and Great Neck, where a woman who walks with a cane was in the dark. LIPA says it?s made temporary fixes in Great Neck and admits it may be a few weeks until the work is complete.
