Many Long Islanders took time out of their day to help those who are less fortunate at soup kitchens.
The First Baptist Cathedral in Westbury's soup kitchen program has been hosting Thanksgiving events since 2001.
Sheila Burks started the annual tradition after witnessing the number of people going hungry in her community.
"I decided, you know, Thanksgiving, why not serve to them?" she says. "So that's why I decided, instead of doing my family, I decided to share it with everyone else."
Volunteers spent their entire morning preparing meals for those in need.
Volunteers say they will serve about 100 meals throughout the afternoon and are also packaging around a dozen meals to give out to the elderly in the community.
"Seniors can't come out, and some of the handicapped can't get out, so those who call and let me know, we deliver it to them," Burks says.
