West Islip schools issued a safety alert Wednesday after a stranger approached middle school students at a bus stop Tuesday.
It says an older white male was driving a gray pickup truck and attempted to engage a group of female students in conversation.
The incident took place at the intersection of Westminster Lane and Pine Avenue.
Police were notified about the incident.
A letter to parents and guardians says young children should not be left unattended at bus stops and that neighbors should take turns watching over students during morning pickups and afternoon drop-offs.
