A West Islip teen will be going for the gold next month in Sochi as a part of the U.S. Olympic luge team.
Aidan Kelly, 19, says he was inspired to take up luge racing after watching the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Back in December, Kelly got the news many athletes dream of when he was invited to join the U.S. luge team heading to Sochi, Russia.
Kelly is currently in Austria to compete in the Junior World Championships. He says he's nervous but excited to represent the United States.
"It's just unbelievable to get to do what I love all the time," says Kelly. "And now I get to do what I love in front of the entire world."
Kelly's family raised $12,000 today at a fundraiser at Farrell's of Brooklyn in West Islip to help them travel to Sochi to see him compete.
