Some neighbors in West Islip say they're tired of getting swamped when there's heavy rainfall and that the town's promise to fix the problem hasn't done much to help.
"Basically we're trapped here when it's bad weather," says Gail Goodman, who's lived in West Islip for four decades.
According to town officials, valves were installed about a month ago to prevent bay water from backing up into the street. But they say the valves are ineffective when they're submerged. The water was at shin-height on Friday.
Goodman and her neighbors say they've issued complaints to the Town of Islip, but to no avail. News 12 also reached out to the town and was told that efforts would be made to remedy the issue.
Neighbors say shortly after News 12 reached out for comment, crews showed up to take a look at the issue. Neighbors say they're also concerned about high tide, which can cause flooding in the area.
