Voters within the West Hempstead School District will be making a decision Tuesday on a bond referendum to repair the district's schools.
West Hempstead School Superintendent John Hogan says he has a wish list of repairs that need to be made in the district's aging buildings, including roof work and masonry work and updated science labs. That's why the school board will hold a new vote on a reduced bond of $35.5 million.
On Friday, a number of parents rallied to get fellow voters to vote "yes." One voter says he was able to take a tour of the school's facilities. He says that buildings are in dire need of updated classrooms and new boilers, among other fixes.
The first bond failed in November, but it has now been reduced by $11 million. The $35.5 million bond will cost taxpayers $23 million. The average homeowner would pay about $285 a year, which would be 78 cents a day over the course of 20 years.
The bond vote is March 15 at the West Hempstead Middle School gymnasium from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
