Republican Ed Wehrheim won the race for Smithtown supervisor Tuesday night and will replace Pat Vecchio, who had been supervisor for 40 years.
Wehrheim was running against Democrat Bill Holst and Kristen Slevin.
"I intend to roll my sleeves up and go to work and carry out all of the issues I talked about in the campaign," he said. "I know that they are doable and I'm prepared to go to work and get them done."
Wehrheim said he wants to open up government and "have a cohesive town board where all elected officials are included in the day-to-day work of Town Hall."
He also said he wants to allow residents and organizations to be part of the process of revitalizing downtown business districts.
