Municipalities across New Jersey are making decisions on whether to hold the annual Fourth of July fireworks displays due to the potential for stormy weather.
The Seaside Heights Boardwalk was filled on Monday with people celebrating the long holiday weekend. The rain held off for most of the morning, but stormy weather was expected for the afternoon and evening.
Beachgoers say that it was worth the risk.
“Yesterday, it was supposed to be a rainy day, and with the exception of 15 minutes of rain, it was perfect. You take your chance with shore weather,” says beachgoer Joe Scavo.
Mayor Tony Vaz says that Tuesday’s fireworks are still on for the time being. But he says with looming rain and haze from the Canadian wildfires, a final decision won’t be made until the day of.
“The committee will make a decision several hours before, if not sooner, depending on what they see with the forecast,” Vaz says.
He says that the fire marshal will help determine the final call with safety as the top issue.
“It’s an enjoyable event, but we always have to always use precautions for weather,” Vaz says.
Perth Amboy has rescheduled its fireworks for July 5. South Brunswick postponed until July 7.
