The spring-like temperatures are wreaking havoc on East End farmers? crops, potentially damaging their field of dreams.
Farmer Jeff Rottkamp says the mild temperatures play tricks on the plants by disrupting the growing cycle. At this time of year, fruit plants should be dormant, but instead, Rottkamp says he sees growth. If the warm weather continues, plants could blossom and bear fruit that would freeze when the mercury drops back down.
The damaged crops of strawberries, apples and peaches could lead to a summer of higher prices for Long Island fruits. Rottkamp says he hasn't experienced a winter as warm as this one in his 40 years of farming.
