Wantagh police have stepped up patrols after two young girls were approached by a man Monday night.
Police say the two fifth-grade students in the Wantagh School District were walking on Briard Street just north of Stratford Road when they say they were approached by a white male driving a black car with black rims and tinted windows.
According to the girls, the man repeatedly tried to get them to come with him, but they declined.
The two girls were able to run away, but the incident has startled those living in the community.
Law enforcement expert Denis Monette says that everyone in the community should play a role in keeping kids safe from potential predators.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Nassau police.
