Wantagh HS football players accused of making anti-Asian comments toward Valley Stream South tennis players

An investigation is underway after members of a Nassau high school football team allegedly made anti-Asian comments toward members of a visiting tennis team.
Asian members of the Valley Stream South girls tennis teams were coughed on and told to "go back to China" by Wantagh football players, according to parents of Wantagh tennis players who were playing the visiting school.
None of the parents wanted to go on camera out of fear of retribution from the district.
The Valley Stream schools superintendent released a statement that says in part, "We were disappointed to hear of the unfortunate incident that occurred ... we have recently observed a disturbing increase in the use of hurtful speech and other actions against members of the Asian American community. We condemn these recent acts that stand in contrast with our belief that everyone be treated with dignity and respect."
The allegations come exactly one week since a 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing eight people in three massage parlors in Atlanta. Officials say six of the victims were Asian, though it is still not clear if their ethnicity was a motive.
But as News 12 has reported, hate crimes against the Asian community have been on the rise for months.
The Wantagh superintendent also released a statement that says it was just one student who made an "inappropriate comment" but did not say if that student was a football player.
They went on to say, "The student responsible for the inappropriate comment will be held accountable for their actions and face appropriate consequences as per our code of conduct" and "Our district will continue to work with all parties involved to educate and move forward on a positive path together."
