Hundreds gather at wake for Sachem East football player
Hundreds of mourners gathered in Medford Monday as wake services were held for the Sachem East High School student killed during a football training drill.
People lined up along Horseblock Road to pay their respects to 16-year-old Joshua Mileto. Some in attendance said they didn't know Mileto personally, but wanted to show their love and support.
Mileto died after he was struck in the head with a log during a strength and conditioning drill. It happened on school grounds during an offseason football camp.
Mileto's great uncle, John Aita, says it's too soon for the family to comment on the circumstances of the teen's death. He says Mileto's parents and relatives are concentrating on paying tribute to a young man who lived for sports and loved to make people laugh.
Football teams from other Long Island schools were among the mourners at Monday's service.
Mileto's cousin, Andrew Wigfall, says the family is grateful for all of the love from the community and is hoping it will continue.
"Josh was a loving kid," says Wifgall. "So just try and spread love as much as possible out there. That's what he would want."
A funeral Mass for Mileto is set for 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Lake Ronkonkoma.
A GoFundMe page in Mileto's honor had raised more than $73,000 as of Monday afternoon.
