Mourners gathered in Huntington Station Sunday to say their goodbyes to a retired FDNY captain from Dix Hills who died last week from 9/11 related cancer.
Firefighters, friends and family attended the wake of 53-year-old Michael Lyons.
Lyons spent more than 20 years with the department and earned numerous honors for his heroism.
On Sept. 11, he was one of only a handful of firefighters who were actually able to extricate a live victim from the rubble at ground zero.
"Mike was actually involved in the rescue of an individual and was able to bring him home, Pasquale Buzzelli, to his pregnant wife. So many guys went down there hoping to do what Mike was able to do. So very proud of Mike," said FDNY Captain James Leach.
Friends said even while he was very sick with stage 4 cancer, he still worked to help others who were suffering with advice and comfort.
Lyons funeral is scheduled for Monday 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth's Church in Melville.
