If you are already sweating your way through this summer, don’t expect to find any relief in your bills. The more dog days of summer, the more dollars we spend on keeping cool.
“Air conditioning and fans are going to be on the top of many people's lists this year,” said Marshal Cohen, Circana’s chief retail analyst.
Cohen is giving his hot take on some of the pricing, starting with a traditional fan. He says they can run anywhere from $29 up to $129 for the more elaborate models you put in your windows. For those who want to crank up the cooling, air conditioners may be a better option.
“Portable air conditioning units run at about $159 to $400. Those are the ones that you can slide into the window and plug in.”
If you want to get your whole house on the same page, be prepared to bump your budget into the thousands.
“A lot of people talk about putting central air into their home. That can cost between $3,500 and $12,000, obviously, depending on the level of cooling you need and the size of your space.”
If those numbers already have you heating up, brace yourself for the price to power it all. During the summer, Cohen says our monthly energy bill can climb up to $300.
Some saving solutions include matching your thermostat to schedule and patronizing local businesses or centers that do the cooling for you.
Even with the pricing, simple tricks like keeping your blinds closed can make it a “chill” summer after all.
