Family, friends and colleagues came together today to say goodbye to the federal agent who was gunned down during a Seaford pharmacy robbery on New Year's Eve.

Mourners who filed into the Charles Schmitt Funeral Home in Seaford fought back tears as they spoke about ATF Special Agent John Capano. ATF Administrative Assistant Mary Ellen Simmons worked with Capano for 10 years and described the father of two as not only methodical and a professional, but sweet and caring.

Police say the 51-year-old off-duty agent was at Charlie's Family Pharmacy picking up his father's cancer medication when career criminal James McGoey tried to hold up the drug store for prescription pills and cash.

In addition to Capano, police say a retired Nassau police officer and an off-duty NYPD cop also went to the scene to stop McGoey. Reports say it was likely a shot from one of their guns that killed Capano.

The wake for Capano will continue tomorrow, and funeral services will take place at St. William the Abbot Catholic Church Friday.
