A Valley Stream man who cheated death multiple times while being treated for the coronavirus went home Monday after 111 days.
Tears ran from Tito Velasquez's face as he walked out of the hospital greeted by his family and hospital staff.
Velasquez beat the coronavirus and beat death multiple times. He had no underlying health conditions.
Dr. Richard Stumacher, chief of division of pulmonary at Northern Westchester Hospital, says when Velasquez arrived at the hospital, his oxygen level was 11%. A normal level is 99%. He was placed on a ventilator immediately.
Velasquez also suffered two strokes and a collapsed lung.
"He was as close to being dead as you ever want to be without actually being dead," said Stumacher.
Velasquez needed assistance on the things he never thought he would need help with, like walking on his own and eating. But Stumacher says he had help from the best.
Velasquez finally left the hospital Monday and all of the doctors who took pictures with him played a vital role in saving his life.
He has a piece of advice for those currently battling the coronavirus.
"To not give up, to keep fighting and not surrender," said Velasquez.
Velasquez says he's looking forward to going home and having a home-cooked meal.
