An uptick in crime on the East End has residents calling for increased police patrols.
Southampton town police have received reports of more than 70 car break-ins in Flanders.
"There's no rhyme or reason to it at this point," says Lt. Susan Ralph.
Ralph says the break-ins began to spike four months ago.
Police arrested 50-year-old Anthony Jenkins Saturday and charged him in four break-in cases. However, police are still investigating incidents. Ralph says a team of at least two are targeting all kinds of cars during the overnight hours.
Also, a fatal shooting on Old Quogue Road last week has residents on edge. The community is now calling for a stronger police presence, which Ralph says is already in place.
"We've put additional patrols up in the Flanders area," Ralph says. "We have a community response unit, as well as putting foot patrols, bike patrols and plainclothes officers up there."
Still, the members of four different civic associations are banding together to petition the town board for more patrols. Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst explained that each member of the Police Benevolent Association has agreed to work four extra days each year, without pay. That will free up six officers to staff community response units to be deployed as needed starting next year.
Throne-Holst also says an additional squad car will be patrolling the Flanders/Riverhead area every night. The town has also made room in its budget to add new police officers to the department.
In the meantime, Southampton police are urging the community to lock their car doors and report it if anything goes missing.
