Nearly 20 tenants were evacuated from a multi-family Uniondale home after Town of Hempstead officials declared the building unfit for human occupancy.
Corroded pipes and temperamental heating, which had the potential to cause gas leaks, were just a few of the reasons cited for the evacuation. Town officials say the pipes could emit carbon monoxide and noted there was not one detector on the premises that could alert tenants about the deadly gas.
Tenant Julie Disken says her landlord, Neville Anthony, should be ashamed of himself for allowing the residents to live in such conditions.
Town officials say Anthony owns a number of rentals and has been issued nearly 50 citations this week, including tickets for illegal occupancy and plumbing without a permit.
The tenants packed up their belongings and headed to nearby hotels.
Calls placed to Anthony went unreturned. Town officials say the next step is to get Keyspan in to assess the building.
