President Donald Trump Monday blasted the New York Times report that said he paid no income taxes in 10 recent years because he claimed his businesses were floundering.
The New York Times says President Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency and $750 his first year in the White House. However, the report also says he paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the 15 years.
The New York Times also reports Trump's properties are struggling and claims he has hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.
The president calls the article "fake news."
"First of all, I've paid a lot, and I paid a lot of state income taxes too. The New York state charges a lot, and I paid a lot of money in state. It'll all be revealed. It's going to come out," says President Trump.
The president's attorney says he paid tens of millions of dollars in "personal" taxes.
Trump is the only president in modern times to not make his returns public.
Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, who is now backing Joe Biden for president, is among the Republicans who have criticized Trump over the decision.
"I don't think anyone should be surprised with these revelations. One, it has taken four years for people even to find this little bit of information, but this is not an individual that's transparent about anything," Ridge said.
