Friends and family of the 10-year-old boy swept away in the waters off Long Beach held a tribute Thursday at the shore.
Ramel McCrae went missing Wednesday after authorities say he and his 11-year-old brother, Jaquan, left their Hempstead home unsupervised and headed to Long Beach near Ocean Beach Park.
City officials said around 6 p.m., the water got rough and the boys struggled to get out. Jaquan managed to get back to the shore, but his brother was not found.
Lifeguards are not full-time in Long Beach until Friday.
Family supporters say they hope the boy is found so the family can have some closure.
The Coast Guard called off the rescue search for Ramel, but Long Beach and Nassau county officials say their search is ongoing.
News 12 spoke with Long Beach's city manager and Nassau County Legislator Siela Bynoe, who say city and county resources are being devoted to the search for Ramel.
