Families from Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport participated in 36th Annual Trees of Hope Celebration Friday in New Haven.

The event, which took place at the Long Warf Maritime Center, benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut.

Organizers say proceeds help families whose children are receive lifesaving medical care.

"When a child is receiving critical medical care, the most important thing is that their family be near them, stay close to them to help and support in their recovery," said Michelle D'Amore, CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut.

Organizers say the tradition began in 1990 with 9 trees at the Governor's Mansion.

180 trees are on display this year.

People can also win gifts through a raffle that is running through Dec. 14.
