Traffic trouble in two Suffolk towns has gotten so bad that the towns are asking the state Department of Transportation to look into lowering the speed limit.

Riverhead and Shelter Island towns are both asking for the right to lower speed limits on certain accident-prone roads and intersections.

But the supervisor of Riverhead, Sean Walter, says the decision is all up to the state Department of Transportation.

"I'm just the humble attorney; I leave that to the engineers to tell me what is a safe speed and what is not a safe speed," he says.

The DOT says it will conduct speed tests in both Riverhead and Shelter Island, and will make a final decision next year.
