The cleanup of toxic debris is in its final stages at a veterans housing complex in Islandia.
As News 12 has reported, soil laced with hazardous waste was dumped at the Veterans Way complex. The waste included banned pesticides and metals.
Two hot spots that still contain the contaminated soil were excavated by crews and will be sent to Pennsylvania. Officials say samples of the soil will be tested.
The six backyards on Veterans Way will be capped with 2 feet of soil as a precaution. News 12 was told that no contaminants were found in the backyards.
The site manager says work at the complex should be completed in the next few days.
News 12 has confirmed that an offer was made to each of the families living on Veterans Way to relocate at no cost to them. One family so far has accepted that offer.
In October, a group of homeowners filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit over the contamination.
The development was opened in 2013.
The trial against six people accused in the toxic dumping, including a former Islip Parks commissioner and members of the Datre family, is set to begin in February.
