Residents in the Town of Smithtown say they do not want more self-storage facilities popping up downtown.
The civic group We Are Nesconset says it doesn't make sense to have massive facilities in small business districts.
There is now a proposal and a vote before the town councilmembers to keep storage facilities out of the downtown area and limit its locations to industrial zones.
A town spokespersons says, "The town remains committed to a balance of smart redevelopment focusing on filling vacant storefronts and derelict shopping centers, restoring parks and beaches, replacing outdated infrastructure and making our downtown areas safe, walkable centers of leisure for the community."
The proposal will be up for a vote in March.
