The Town of Islip Animal Shelter is participating in the Betty White Challenge - a national effort to raise money for animal shelters in honor of the late actress.
The Betty White Challenge encourages fans of the late actress, who was an animal advocate and passed away on Dec. 31, 2021 at the age of 99, to donate $5 to animal rescues and shelters in her name.
"Then we can take those donations and turn them into food and biscuits and treats for the animals who are being held here until they're adopted," says Town of Islip Councilmember Jim O'Connor.
The ultimate goal is to have these four-legged friends find their forever home.
Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter says White's passion for animals was her legacy.
"The public. That's her family and they have rallied, and we see it already," says Carpenter.
There will be reduced adoption rates on dogs older than five at the town of Islip's animal shelter.
