The Town of Huntington says it is in need of equipment and workers for the snow season.
The announcement comes after the town board passed a resolution increasing the amount it will pay drivers who have trucks with plows.
Andre Sorrentino, the highway superintendent for the Town of Huntington, says pay has gone up $25 to $30 more an hour. For instance, a driver with an SUV or pickup truck and a plow will now make $122 an hour.
“We want to make sure the men and women get taken care of because no one wants to work for free,” Sorrentino says.
The town is looking for about 100 drivers with trucks and equipment to sign on. The town is also offering to help drivers through the licensing process.
Sorrentino says while the town is looking for snowplow drivers, they would be ready to respond if a blizzard hit tomorrow.
“We are gearing up…full loads of salt in the barns ready to hit all the 871 miles of roadways,” he says.
The state Department of Transportation says it has been looking to hire more workers since November. It needs 30 full-time workers on Long Island and 600 across the state.
“We are getting close to the peak of snow and ice season, and we need people to come work for us,”  says Stephen Canzoneri, of the DOT. “It's not just plowing snow, it's mowing, it's fixing guide rails, it’s filling potholes.”
If you own a truck and a plow, you can apply to work for Huntington on the town’s website.
