Town of Hempstead attorneys subpoenaed a private New York City dog shelter today in an effort to track down two pit bulls involved in a violent attack.

Rose Minenna says she was walking her Yorkipoo, Zoe, on Millburn Avenue in Baldwin on Oct. 13 when two pit bulls attacked. She says she tried to protect Zoe, but the dogs ripped Zoe from her arms and killed her.

Minenna filed a complaint with police, who charged owner Eric Monuhan with having dangerous dogs. But in court today, Monuhan insisted the dogs weren't his, claiming his employees rescued them after Superstorm Sandy, and now the dogs are missing.

The Town of Hempstead told News 12 that dog owners should be responsible for their animals and that they will be prosecuting the case to the fullest extent of the law.
