Officials with the town of Brookhaven are warning residents about a scam involving letters about tax assessments.
Someone sent out bogus letters to residents claiming that town assessors would be making home visits this weekend. But Town Supervisor Ed Romaine says there are no reassessments and the letters are a scam.
"We don't want to scare people, but we do want to alert them," Romaine says. "Every town employee that comes will have a badge. It's highly unlikely anyone will be visited by a town employee this weekend. Do not let people in claiming to be a town employee."
Anyone who receives a letter is urged to contact the town's public safety commissioner.
