Dozens of Long Island students are spending part of their Christmas break volunteering at a food bank.
The students are lending their time to the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge, where millions of pounds of nonperishable goods are donated for needy Long Island families each year.
"The students are with us because we just have a lot of food to pack up and get it out," explained Long Island Cares CEO Paule Pachter. "We're still in the middle of the holiday season."
The food bank is expecting more than 100 volunteers this week to help sort the food, weigh it and get it ready for distribution. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a parent to help, too.
