A Suffolk County jury found a 32-year-old resident of El Salvador guilty of murder Wednesday, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney.

Darwin Josue Maldonado Venegas shot and killed his 24-year-old roommate, Daniel Nunez-Hernandez in April last year.

On April 3, 2025, police arrived after other tenants of the shared Bay Shore home found the body of Nunez-Hernandez with gunshot wounds to his chest and arm. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors say witnesses heard shots ring out and that records showed Vanegas Maldonado had been in the home about the same time the shots were heard.

After the murder, prosecutors say Maldonado Vanegas withdrew large sums of money and fled to Miami, Florida.

He was apprehended there on May 7, 2025, by Suffolk County police and members of the City of Miami Police Department.

"Today’s decision affirms that violence in our community will be met with firm and determined prosecution," said Tierney.
