Thousands of Long Islanders came together Saturday to honor a fallen Navy SEAL from Patchogue.
Organizers say more than 5,000 people were expected to participate in the four-mile run around Lake Ronkonkoma to honor Lt. Michael Murphy but because of the rain, about 2,000 people showed up.
Lt. Murphy was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2005 and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2007.
His story was transformed into the movie "Lone Survivor," which was released in 2013. The film is the heroic story of 4 Navy SEALS who were deep behind enemy lines on a mission to kill or capture a high-ranking member of the Taliban.
Organizers say Saturday's race raised more than $100,000 for several military and rotary charities, including the Navy SEAL Foundation and the Murphy Foundation.
