So many runners participated in the Great Cow Harbor race in Northport Saturday they had to start off in groups.
It was the 29th year for the annual 10K race that raised money for Special Olympics. While the race attracts runners from across the U.S., race co-director Jerry Wood says it has a hometown feel. Wood says when they bring in elite runners to New York, they stay with the local families and not in hotels.
There was also a 2K fun-run, which raised money for Canine Companions for Independence, which trains assistance dogs. More than 5,000 runners participated in the two races. Ryan Hill of California set a course record with his victory. However, since the race is for such a good cause, all the runners were considered winners.
