A Coram man says thousands of dollars in valuables were stolen from his Public Storage unit in Holbrook and he has yet to receive clear answers from the company or its insurance provider.

Vance Cousin says he had been renting the storage unit for about two months when he discovered the break-in last Sunday.

“The door was closed. I opened the door and my unit was ransacked,” Cousin said.

Suffolk County police say the lock on Cousin’s unit was cut and cash was taken on Jan. 25. Cousin says his unit was not the only one targeted.

“I think it was about 14 units or something like that,” he said. “And then we found out that day that the previous week there was four units that were broken into that we weren’t notified about.”

Cousin showed News 12 footprints behind the building that he says led to an exit door, raising concerns that someone inside may have assisted whoever committed the theft.

He says a safe inside his unit was broken into and valuable vintage items were stolen, including Michael Jordan jerseys, video games, and gold and silver bullion. Cousin estimates the total loss at about $6,000.

“They rolled out the red carpet for this person,” he said. “The person had hours in here. They were pretty much shopping.”

Through the glass windows of the rental office, multiple surveillance cameras are visible. Cousin says there are no cameras inside the storage hallways, only at the entrance and exit where customers enter using a code.

Cousin says he is still waiting for answers from both Public Storage and its insurance company regarding his claim.

“They pretty much already let me know that they are not covering anything and I’m not going to get anything back,” Cousin said, adding that both sides have referred him back and forth.

News 12 reached out to Public Storage multiple times, calling several different numbers to ask about the reported break-in and claims that other units were also targeted, but did not receive a response as of Thursday evening.
