Port Washington police warn residents about scams targeting seniors
Officers shared crime prevention tips and warned residents about scams and an increase in retail thefts in the area.
Port Washington police are helping residents protect themselves from crime by sharing safety tips during a crime prevention forum.
Police said one of their biggest concerns is scams targeting seniors. Scammers are using phone calls and emails to trick people into handing over thousands of dollars, according to police.
Officers are reminding residents to be careful about who they share their personal information with.
“We want them to take these steps and prevent themselves from being victims. Definitely buying gift cards is no good. Speaking to people on the phone and giving them more information than they need, like personal information, are things they have to avoid,” said Sgt. Peter Griffith, of the Port Washington Police District.
Police also said they have seen an increase in retail thefts in the area.
